Maxim Afinogenov signed a 3-year deal yesterday.
More good news from the Sabres.

Yea, good call bonniesfan. Is anyone else surprised about how willing the Sabres are to spend money? It's so great to have an owner that gets it and is willing to spend the necessary money to win.

I'm happy as hell they signed that guy. He's a talent like no other in the NHL. He ties up two defenders by speeding down the ice and stopping on a dime, leaving another forward open to receive the pass and get a quick shot on net. His playoff production sucked, but I think that was due to a lack of experience. His point rate would have given him 36 for a full season, which is half of what he totaled.
I think the multi-year deals are a direct result of Briere's arbitration ruling. Before that Darcy wouldn't sign anybody long-term. He called Cambpell's signing 'multi-year,' and it's only a two year contract. He openly stated he would rather have one DAY contracts. Briere gets one year at $5 million, Golisano makes a phone call, and now they're locking everybody up. We could have kept McKee for $2.5 for four years, but Regeir wouldn't go past three. After arbitration, immediately Lydman and Tallinder get four year deals.
Money can't really be an issue. The Sabres claim they made $4 million last year, but every home playoff game is worth about $1 million and the Sabres played eight. They had a regular season profit. Plus, season ticket sales for this year are at 12,000 without even counting minipacks. I think they have the cash for the spending they're doing.

I think once you by season tickets, you keep them until the team consitently brutally sucks. Just look at the Bills. Not only have they not made the playoffs since 99, they've only had one winning season since then. Yet they still sold out every game last year, just like every other year. People get used to going to every game.
Anyway Cosmo, am I going to be a moderator again or what? I hate seeing "New Bevel" or it's equivelent, "New Member" next to my name.

Accept the arbitration and then send JP and Biron somewhere as a package deal.
That would clear enough cap space to sign Briere.

Yea, except who wants over $5MM in salary (Dumont + Biron) and what are they going to give us in return for that? I think they're going to have to deal them separately. My gut tells me they're just going to walk away from JP's award and make him an unrestricted FA

I like Schopp and the Bulldog, but it sounds like they're missing it. As busy as Regeir's been in signing guys and avoiding arbitration lately, it's hard to believe he didn't offer some sort of deal for Dumont. He was hurt a lot last season but still put up 40 points in 54 games. That's a 60-61 point pace.
They couldn't just cut Dumont without hearing what his arbitration would go for. I don't see the Sabres keeping him at $2.9 million though. I just did the math, and every point Dumont got last season was worth $72,500. At that rate, Afinigenov's arbitration would have netted him $5.3 million.
Who the hell handles these arbitration hearings?

The Sabres accepted Briere's $5 mil 1 yr contract. AWESOME news. Anyone else worried that Ryan Miller hasn't been signed yet?

A corner piece in the puzzle called STANLEY!
So not counting Dumont, the Sabres are at $34 million with Kalinin, Miller, and Mair left. Mair's arbitration is today, but that shouldn't be too costly. Whatever it comes back as I hope they pay him. That man deserves an A on his sweater.

This is the year. One more defenseman. . .and the cup comes to buffalo.
Holy shit. I've become a typical buffalo fan.

Adam Mair's arbitration award came in at $675,000 yesterday. The Sabres must accept this award since it is under $1.4 million. This is a great price for Mair, who can play any of the forward positions.
