FILTERS

A couple of valid points have been brought up about our filtering system here on the BevelWagon. We obviously need the filters so we don't anger the folks at Proboards, but some of the filters for commonly used words are making posts a little cluttered and hard to read. As a couple people pointed out, it's funny to us, but to new members they might seem pretty lame.

It's a tough topic, because I like that the BevelWagon has it's own style and jargon, but at the same time I'd hate to be alienating new members because we're giggling at our inside jokes and the noobs are clueless.

So, since polls have been so popular, what do you all think about the filters?

***Editted to add: for the first option, it wouldn't really be ALL filters, just the filters for common words that come up a lot.

I'm not sure what words are filtered and what other filters mean. I think a cheat sheet is needed somewhere to fully understand them

Leave them be. They aren't too hard to figure out.

Maybe we could use the same censor for each naughty word. I'm specifically thinking of genitalia (like I always do). P enis cave is funny, but there's also girl thingy and BONNIEBALL. Joystick, man dangler, thingy... there's just too many censors replacing common everyday normal conversations about genitalia.

I like our jargon.

I think 'Leave them as is' should be accompanied by a sticky thread, a censored words dictionary if you will. Problem with that is you have to say the bad word to explain what the censored word for that is. But you could just dance around it by spelling it with spaces.

I love the filters, even ones I don't fully get. I think we should use the blog on the bevel myspace page to explain them. In the meantime I'll experiment to see what is what

I like fuck and I agree the penis cave and dick should just be used for all genitalia. All others should either be spelled like $hit or Sh**, etc.

I think that anyone new would have a tough time figuiring out what's going on. Keep General Tso's chicken but replace the rest with words/phrases that more approximate the word/pharse being replaced.. For instance...c un t could be snatch and co ck could be dick. Dick goes into snatch! What could be simpler?

Kinda split down the middle. Let's get some more input on this. I think another option could be leave them as is for the most part and for people who don't want their words mangled by the filters, use alternative lettering, but make sure they are still fondled. EG, you could spell fucking as F*%$ing or something along those lines.

The only issue with this is the point about the noobs. If we are really concerned about people understanding these filters, that doesn't really address that. I, for one, don't really care about noobs because I think we are pretty well established with the Bevelators at this point. However, its fairly shortsighted and negative to not expect or want this board to expand to a broader audience. That's why I voted for changing most of the fondled (what happened to this filter, by the way?) words to the more boring, yet easier to understand censors like F**K and SH*T and C*NT and C*CKSUCKER

By the way, dru nk should always ALWAYS ALWAYS be fondled into BENT

The tough thing about this issue, is that when you get right down to it, the one that creates the most problems is the one people love the most, and that is fuck. It's made me laugh my ass off for quite awhile now, but maybe it should just go back to being something easier to understand. And people who were fans of it could always spell it out. I'll probably get smited for even suggesting removing this one, but I'll just toss the suggestion out there.

This is a tough one, because General Tso's Chicken is the type of filter that makes the BevelWagon what it is....creative, funny, and totally off the General Tso's Chickenin' wall. But I can also see bonafide's point about some posts with a ton of fondled words being basically unreadable, especially if you are new to the Bevel. Its really no surprise this poll is split as evenly as it is.

EDIT: This topic and the amazingly interesting and appropriate 9/11 thread have combined to create a frenzy of Bevelating activity the likes of which we've never seen on the BevelWagon II. We hit our all-time high of 16 members on at once today at 3:53pm
