I'm throwing my weight on this message board behind Washington as well. The only bad thing about DC is how expensive housing is. Otherwise, it's great for young people. Public transportation is better than anywhere but NYC. There's tons of great bars, a lot to do, a huge number of under-30 types in the area, and the girl-guy ratio is pretty good, IMO.How good? When I lived down there in 2001, our apartment building threw a little party for us and the rest of the tenants. I walked up to one group of guys, and they were discussing their General Tso's Chickening SAT scores. At that moment, I knew I'd do well in Washington where the ladies are concerned.
The typical DC girl is more of a career woman. There are many more law students, writers, political people. The bars aren't full of elementary school teachers who want nothing else but to get knocked up, like in some other cities.
That's my experience, at least. I'm partial to the area because I work in politics. I'm looking at moving down there myself after the election.
By the way, Buffalo is nearly equidistant to Washington as it is to New York City. According to Google, 408 miles fron New York, 412 miles from Washington. The difference is that you take the Thruway from New York, but you take the entire length of the 219 from Washington (which I suppose is a pretty big difference).
The 219 is slow and it's a sleeper. You have to go up through every little small town in central PA. I find that if I take the Turnpike to Pittsburgh and then the 79 to the 90 it takes more miles but less time.
