Sorry to break up the WT bashing, but just found this. This guy is a smart fugitive, not like our WNY WT boy Bucky. By the way, doesn't the name Bucky ooze of WT? No offense to Bucky Gleason at the Buffalo News
Fugitive arrested after 24 years on the run KALISPELL, Montana (AP) -- A Canadian man sought by authorities after crashing a rented airplane into a lake and swimming away as it sank with his girlfriend inside has been arrested in Texas after 24 years as a fugitive.
Jaroslaw "Jerry" Ambrozuk was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for negligent homicide in the August 22, 1982, death of 18-year-old Dianne Babcock.
Police in Plano, Texas, arrested the 43-year-old and set bail at $20,000. However, authorities said the Canadian national cannot pay bond because of outstanding immigration violations.
It was not known Thursday night if Ambrozuk has an attorney. A call to his house in Plano was not immediately returned.
Authorities said Ambrozuk, then 19, and Babcock were supposed to have been flying from Penticton, British Columbia, to Vancouver, British Columbia, when he somehow veered off course into Montana.
Authorities said Ambrozuk's strange behavior after the crash raised suspicion.
He did not report the crash or his girlfriend's death to authorities, he apparently built a campfire on the shore of the lake to dry off and then vanished.
Authorities know that Ambrozuk called a friend after the crash, saying the plane was at the bottom of Little Bitterroot Lake near Marion. He said he swam free of the wreckage, but Babcock's seat belt was jammed and he was unable to free her.
"We didn't really believe we would find the plane in Bitterroot Lake," said Sheriff Jim Dupont, who was a deputy at the time of the crash.
But a search found evidence along the shore of a campfire. In the burned debris, Dupont -- a pilot -- recognized plane parts. Searchers found the Cessna 150 in 220 feet of water.
Dupont said it didn't appear Ambrozuk tried to help Babcock.
"She wasn't injured to the point she couldn't get out of the aircraft," he said. "Why wouldn't he help her get out?"
Missing from the plane were cash and other items. A sealed, waterproof trash bag with a rope attached was found on the lake shore. People who later said they saw someone who looked like Ambrozuk on the shore said he was wet, but carrying a dry duffel bag. Authorities wondered if Ambrozuk had sealed the duffel inside the trash bag and removed it when he got to shore.
The mystery of the crash and Ambrozuk's disappearance was featured twice on the television program "America's Most Wanted."
Dupont said earlier he believed Ambrozuk might be in Texas. That was confirmed Monday when a woman called saying she believed Ambrozuk was living in Plano, Texas. Dupont contacted police in Texas and they found him.
When he was arrested Ambrozuk, living under the alias Michael Lee Smith, acknowledged his identity and asked for a lawyer, Dupont said.
Montana will extradite him on the negligent homicide charge.

Looks like Bucky's days on the lamb with his WT friends and family might be numbered now that CNN has it as a top story...
Ongoing hunt for 'Bucky' amused locals, till troopers shot [/b]CASSADAGA, New York (AP) -- For months, authorities in western New York scoured hunting campsites, stopped traffic and questioned acquaintances in a search for an escaped inmate with the skills of a seasoned outdoorsman.
On Friday, the manhunt intensified after authorities said two participating troopers were ambushed by a sniper hiding in the woods. Seventy-five additional troopers were called up to help as the pair lingered in critical condition.
Police believe the gunman was Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, who escaped from jail in April and may be traveling between Pennsylvania and western New York, said State Police Superintendent Wayne Bennett. Since his escape, Phillips has been suspected in the wounding of another state trooper, numerous burglaries and the theft of a gun shop.(Watch police fed up with fugitive, saying enough is enough -- 1:48)
"We are not looking for a shootout. That's not the way we want this to end," Bennett said. But he also warned Phillips that "We have long memories. We don't forget. We are patient. ... Don't stop to look over your shoulder because we'll be there."
'Bucky burgers' and T-shirts
The five-month manhunt has turned Phillips into somewhat of a local amusement here, sometimes frustrating police. A restaurant offered a "Bucky Burger" and some bars in the area sold T-shirts with sayings such as "Got Bucky?" (Watch relatives angry at police: "Bucky's not a bad guy!" -- 1:30)
Phillips, 44, broke out of the Erie County jail on April 2 by using a can opener to pry open a 2-by-2-foot opening in the kitchen ceiling and escaping through the roof, police have said. He was serving 90 days for a parole violation.
Since then, he has helped himself to food, clothes and guns from unattended homes and hunting cabins in western New York, and is believed to have stolen about 15 cars, police said.
He is also wanted in the June 10 shooting of Trooper Sean Brown, who survived after being shot in the abdomen as he approached a stolen car near Elmira.
But after the latest shootings, some Chautauqua County residents were growing less amused.
"In the beginning, it was 'Ha, ha.' Now it's scary, and I just wish it was over," said waitress Dawn McCarthy.
Troopers Joseph Longobardo, 32, and Donald Baker Jr., 38, were shot Thursday while staking out the isolated hilltop home of Phillips' former girlfriend, Kasey Crowe, who is among those accused of aiding the fugitive. So far, six people have been arrested on charges they helped give Phillips cover.
One trooper was hit in the back with a bullet that penetrated his bullet-resistant vest, Bennett said. The other was shot in the thigh and suffered massive blood loss from a severed artery.
The troopers never saw it coming, Bennett said, and did not return fire.
Shooting deer with handgun
At a bail hearing for Crowe on Friday, a state police investigator testified that a search of her house after the shootings turned up night-vision binoculars and a two-way radio, along with pizza crusts and beer cans that will be tested for Phillips' DNA.
Investigator Gary Colon also testified that a 10-year-old boy said he saw Phillips at Crowe's home on August 20. Phillips shot a deer with a handgun through a window, then went out and skinned it, according to the child.
Crowe was charged last week with hindering prosecution for allegedly helping Phillips, and prosecutors said she has continued to help him. A Chautauqua County judge jailed her Friday afternoon and increased her bail to $100,000 from $10,000.
Family and friends said Phillips, while a career thief who had spent nearly half his life in jail, had never before been violent and would not shoot a trooper. A reward for help leading to his arrest and conviction -- increased to $225,000 from $50,000 on Friday -- has gone uncollected.
Authorities say his disdain for police was well known. Sheriff's officials said he left a note for officials when he was released or transferred from the Chautauqua County jail several years ago, threatening "to splatter pig meat all over Chautauqua County."
The April jailbreak also wasn't Phillips' first, and friends said he was determined not to go back. A "Wanted" poster warned that Phillips had threatened "suicide by cop."

Trooper wounded in 'Bucky' hunt dies
(CNN) -- One of the New York state troopers shot last week during a search for fugitive Ralph "Bucky" Phillips died Sunday, New York State Police Superintendent Wayne Bennett said.
The officer, 32-year-old Joseph Longobardo, had a leg amputated on Saturday as doctors at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, New York, tried to save his life.
The other officer who survived Thursday's shooting, Donald Baker Jr., 38, has been upgraded from critical to serious condition in Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, Trooper Rebecca Gibbons said. (Watch police fed up with fugitive, saying enough is enough -- 1:48)
Longobardo and Baker were combing a wooded area in Chautauqua County in New York for Phillips when they were shot by what may have been a high-powered rifle, Bennett said in a statement released Friday.
State police believe Phillips, 44, is the prime suspect in the shooting. He escaped Erie County Correctional Facility in April where he was serving time for a parole violation. He also allegedly shot a state trooper in June. That trooper, Sean Brown, is recovering.
The search for Phillips continued in Chautauqua County, located in the westernmost corner of New York state. Bennett said he has assigned an additional 75 officers to the search.
"We will be here as long as it takes to bring Ralph Phillips into custody," he said in the statement.
Phillips has served time in prison for eight felony convictions, among them burglary, Gibbons told CNN. (Watch relatives angry at police: "Bucky's not a bad guy!" -- 1:30)
Police have issued a $225,000 reward for anyone with information that may lead officers to the arrest of Phillips, whom they consider to be "armed and dangerous."
Phillips is 6 feet tall, approximately 240 pounds with short, black, wavy hair, according to police.
Anyone with information regarding the investigation is urged to call (716) 679-1520.

I'm watching Channel 2 News and they're speculating from the change in police activity in the search area that they have captured Ralph "Bucky" Phillips.
CNN.com and CNN Headline News are pissing me off by repeatedly referring to him as 'Buck' Phillips

Alright, listen up, people. Our fugitive has been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles-per-hour. That gives us a radius of six miles. What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Dr. Richard Kimble. Go get him.

According to News 2 outta Buffalo, the Police Superintendent should be making a statement shortly, if not by the time this is posted. News 2 also reported that shots were fired.
